WATER: YOUR PRESCRIPTION FOR A HEALTHY LIFE

Throughout the pages of The Body Book, Cameron Diaz professes her love for water and how it is literally life. “Once I drink the water in the bottle by my sink, I feel it immediately. I go from being a wilted plant to one that has just been rejuvenated by the rain. All of my cells fill up with water and I become firm and bright and vibrant again.”

But why? Why do human need water and how much do we need daily? Amanda Kriebel has your prescription below.

Your HEALTH Portrait is your Self Portrait

What does “being healthy” mean? That’s the question Amanda Kriebel tackles in this personal essay about moving from an unwell darkness to the sunshine of wellbeing. She shares actionable advice for how to follow your internal compass and discover what works for you to function optimally.

Booty amnesia

Wake your Glutes up from the dead folks! Have you heard of Gluteal Amnesia? Also known as 'Dead Butt Syndrome' aka DBS, Gluteus Medius Tendinopathy, Sleepy Butt or I call it Booty Amnesia. It’s a real deal thing and I'm guessing you're sitting on your derrière right now as you read this. By chance does it feel numb after sitting for extended periods of time? Those layers of cushiony muscles are shutdown as our weight compresses them. As a result, they lose their memory and literally forget how to work and contract.

You had me at mushrooms 🍄

Yep, you had me at mushrooms! I’ve been taking the capsule form for YEARS after reading bits and pieces here and there about the benefits of mushrooms. Welcome to the lowdown on these rightfully trendy little decorations that adorn many fairytale scenes.

Laying on the Floor Completely Changed My Life

DAMN. Life is better with yoga. Moving and breathing. Feeling and healing. But what many don’t expect is that I practice yoga specifically for Savasana — aka corpse pose. In fact, it is renowned as the most important pose.

I teach yoga to thoughtfully guide my students to this pose so they fully receive their practice. The inhales. The exhales. To rest in a haven of sacred stillness. The journey to Savasana is different everyday as well as the experience in it. It’s a process and a practice.

But if I am being honest, it wasn’t always this way for me…

CUPPING CRAZE

As a physical therapist I sometimes feel like a wizard scheming and plotting all sorts of fascinating therapies, intriguing movement philosophies and concocting lotions and potions for my patients. One of my favorite magic wand waving techniques is fire glass cupping. As a patient myself I have experienced cupping and I love the way my muscles feel invigorated, yet also relaxed. So I added it to my bag of tricks.

Interview 2016: CARISSA MOORE.

A true champion of inspiration.

Olympic Gold medalist.

Professional surfer Carissa Moore, age 23, is a three-time world surfing champion: 2011 (the youngest female to earn the title at age 18), 2013 and again in 2015! She also was ASP rookie of the year in 2010, one of Glamour Magazines “Women of the Year” in 2013, and she was inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame in 2014. The list of incredible accomplishments goes on… she even has an actual DAY named after her! That’s right! Mark your calendars, January 4th is Carissa Moore Day in Hawaii, a day she declares is to: “Do something that makes your heart and soul happy.”

TAKE A BREATH. TAKE IT IN. LET IT GO.

TAKE CARE.

Go ahead and slouch right now. Yep- you read correctly, slouch. For this one time only though, haha. J And take a deep breath. How’d that go? Now- sit up tall with a lengthened spine. Take another breath. Much better, right? Posture is key for our breathing! Otherwise the hunched appearance also known as excessive thoracic kyphosis limits rib expansion. And it also compresses the diaphragm, which is the primary muscle for breathing. The more thoracic flexion or kyphosis, the less lung capacity - up to 30% less!

Better posture = Better lung capacity = Better breathing = More oxygen = More energy.

5 Words Athletes Should Keep in Mind Through Recovery

Raise your hand if you are in “recovery mode.” Recovery mode has many forms. From a hard workout to a late night out on the town, a long flight, the flu, or recovering your home through an unexpected remodel after a water leak (yep, that’s me), to deeper recovery wounds like the loss of a loved one or of course, recovering from an addiction. The list goes on. We are recovering all the time in varying degrees of intensity and we are even in recovery mode from the daily demands of life.

So what does recovery mean?

When life gives you celery. Make celery juice.

The celery juice trend is still going strong into another season! It’s like no matter what time of year, decade or century for that matter, leopard print is always “in” for me! I’ll toast to that! What is so great about celery — this seemingly calorie-less, nutrient-less vegetable or whatever it is? Its history runs deep…

FOUR YOGA POSES

TO RELIEVE TECH NECK

How often do you look down at your beloved phone? Perhaps you are right now! A study showed that on average people look at their phone every six and a half minutes, that’s around 150 times a day. YIKES! And then, how LONG do you get caught looking down in the scrolling game? On average a person gazes down at their phone for two to four hours a day, that’s close to 700-1400 hours a year. YIKES AGAIN!! Not only is the repeated motion of cervical flexion/looking down wreaking havoc on your delicate spine, so is the amount of time you spend staring downward…
